The Maine Farmed Seafood Coalition was formed in 2025. We are a collaboration between dozens of sea farms and industry businesses/organizations. We support sustainable aquaculture by telling true stories about sea farmers, their families, and communities. We provide information to the public about the cultural and economic contributions of sea farming in Maine and how it strengthens our working waterfronts.
We have identified that one of the greatest barriers to growth for Maine’s aquaculture industry is public knowledge. Many Mainers don’t know what sea farmers do or how delicious farmed seafood is, and we want to let them know.We are supported by our members, including the organizations on our steering committee: Maine Aquaculture Association, FocusMaine, World Wildlife Fund, Coastal Enterprises, and Island Institute. These organizations support the coalition with funding and human capacity.

Maine Farmed Seafood Coalition’s long-term goal is to create greater understanding, passion, and enthusiasm for Maine farmed seafood. To accomplish this, we focus on communications and educational projects including local and statewide campaigns. In February of 2026, we launched “Maine Farmers are Why”, a multimedia campaign designed to lift up sea farmers as stewards of our ocean ecosystem.
Our communications initiatives include paid advertising, social media, direct mail, editorial submissions, and in-person events. If you have an idea for a collaboration or a project for Maine Farmed Seafood Coalition to get involved with, please contact us.

Maine has always been innovative and adaptable to economic change, and our culture is deeply rooted in a connection with our natural resources—especially the ocean.
While some of our wild fisheries thrive, others face challenges. Changes in the environment and in regulations can pose challenges to our marine economy, and aquaculture is a form of diversification that provides strength and resilience to those who work on the water. It is a way to make sure all our eggs aren’t in one basket (or—if you will—make sure all our oysters aren’t in one bucket).
There is tremendous opportunity for aquaculture in Maine. Over 80% of seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported, and most of that imported seafood is farmed abroad. Simultaneously, Maine’s clean waters and marine heritage make our seafood exceptional. At Maine Farmed Seafood Coalition, we believe aquaculture strengthens our economy and will keep our families working on the water for generations to come. -
You can support aquaculture in your community by eating Maine farmed seafood!
Seafood markets in Maine have local farmed seafood, just ask the fish monger where their shellfish and salmon come from—there’s a high likelihood that they were farmed in Maine. You can also often buy directly from farmers. Check out their websites and place an order.
Otherwise, you can spread the word among your friends and family and tell them that farmed seafood is good for Maine’s people, economy, and is highly nutritious and delicious.
